Operator and Maintenance Training

Training Facilities

Sperry Marine leads the industry with its commitment to full product training and support.  The measure of our commitment can be found in the extent of our physical training infrastructure.  To satisfy the demand of our customers to provide training on par with our products, we have invested in internationally certified training centers at key locations worldwide.  These training centers provide a wide variety of certified training to the commercial, foreign military and US Defense markets.  These sites have been approved by the appropriate government agency in each country as meeting the standards for STCW 95 certified training centers. Our US facilities have been certified by the US Coast Guard (USCG), while our facilities in the UK have been certified by England’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Worldwide Locations

The training facilities in Charlottesville, VA USA, New Malden, UK and Hamburg, Germany are nearly identical. All locations have classrooms dedicated to ECDIS training. One classroom is reserved for Maintenance Training, the other for Operator Training. Our ECDIS Operator Training classroom consists of eight independent student ECDIS workstations and one instructor station. These centers consist of full Integrated Bridge System (IBS) simulators combined with student classrooms.  The IBS simulators have multi-node Voyage Management Systems (VMS) configured with either ECDIS or ECDIS-N interfaced with dual Bridge Master E (BME) series radars, ADG-4000 autopilots and other necessary sensors.

Classrooms

The classrooms have individual student learning stations to maximize hands-on learning for the sailors.   Each student station has full, independent simulation to provide the most productive learning environment.  Basic skills are introduced and practiced in the classroom, then refined in the bridge simulator. Each student's workstation is equipped with its own simulator to provide realistic sensor information, ship control, environmental data and radar target input. These workstations allow the students to maximize their hands-on time with the ECDIS. The instructor uses a digital projector in combination with a touchscreen Smart Board to present all materials in a very large, easy to follow format.
